What can I expect at my first appointment?
The first appointment generally takes around 70-90 minutes. This is an opportunity for us to meet, to talk about your current issues and difficulties and to formulate a general plan that will steer our focus over the next few sessions. The number of sessions is determined by you and your current situation, though I usually encourage weekly to fortnightly appointments (initially). Minimum number of sessions is between 3 and 5.
Is there anything else that occurs during our first session?
There is a consent process, I will collect some general information (contact details and health demographics) and complete a rating scale.
Can I bring a support person?
Yes, it is important you feel comfortable and supported.
Is there anything I need to consider before attending the session?
It is helpful to consider what brings you to counselling and what you might like to work on. This may be of a general focus (to have an opportunity to talk about situation) or it may be more specific (i.e. dealing with negative type thoughts, anxiety management approaches etc.).
